Interior of St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City
So sad that I cannot witness the last appearance of Pope Benedict XVI. I watched over the German television this evening that he leads a final public prayer today in St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. A crowd of thousands were gathered in St. Peter’s Square to witness the ceremony.

Nearly to weeks ago, Pope Benedict XVI announced to the public that he is resigning. That was a shock for some especially in the Catholic community. His main reason why he is resigning is due to deteriorating health. I was saddened after hearing the news but I respect the Pope’s decision. May God bless him and continue his mission as a servant of God.
I once visited Rome, the capital of Italy. I and my friend also took the chance to visit Vatican City where the biggest church can be found, the St. Peter’s Basilica. We climbed to the top of the dome during our visit. We also had the chance to see the interior of St. Peter’s Basilica. I was amazed by the architecture I witness inside. The interior is truly beautiful! Truly and amazing work of art!

The entire interior of St Peter’s is lavishly decorated with marble, reliefs, architectural sculpture and gilding. The basilica contains a large number of tombs of popes and other notable people, many of which are considered outstanding artworks. There are also a number of sculptures in niches and chapels, including Michelangelo’s Pieta. The central feature is a baldachin, or canopy over the Papal Altar, designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The sanctuary culminates in a sculptural ensemble, also by Bernini, and containing the symbolic Chair of St Peter. wikipedia.
