Fill Your Closet with Your Best Colors
Guest Post by Ever Pretty
If you’re looking for fashion tips, you’ve probably heard quite a bit about dressing for your body type and wearing clothes that flatter your figure. What you won’t hear as often is how important it is to wear the right colors for your skin tone, hair color and figure. The wrong colors can either make you the center of attention in a bad way, or wash you out and make you look drab and awkward in even the best fitting casual summer dresses.
Choosing the right colors is a matter of assessing your hair and skin color and trying several different things until you find which color scheme is perfect for you.
Start with Your Hair Color
Your hair color is perhaps one of the most important factors in choosing the right colors of clothing.
- Blondes should stick with brighter, warmer shades like oranges, yellows, rusts, taupes and tans.
- Redheads shine in oranges, browns, ivories, greens and taupes.
- Brunettes have the most flexibility and look great in a wide variety of colors like blues, oranges, pinks, chocolate browns and greens.
- Women with gray hair look better in brighter colors like plums, purples, reds and roses.
The lighter your hair color is, the brighter you want the clothing near your face to be. Bright colors give your face a youthful look and bring out your own natural skin tones.
Move on to Your Underlying Skin Color
Your skin color is also incredibly important when picking out the right colors for your outfits. Although it may not be obvious in the mirror, your underlying skin tone is a big part of what colors look good on you.
To find your underlying skin tone, use the following tricks:
- Pinch the tip of your finger, the back of your hand or the skin of your earlobe, and look closely at the skin for several seconds after your pinching. This is your underlying skin tone.
- If your underlying skin tone is golden, peach, red or a coral color, stick with warm color choices in your clothing.
- If your underlying skin tone is pink, rosy, red-violet or blue, stick with cool colors in your wardrobe choices.
Trial and Error
Once you’ve got a basic idea of the colors that look great on you, it’s time to try several different outfits to determine which colors really flatter you and bring out your natural assets. Printed dresses and fabrics should be included in different colors to determine which pattern colors look best on you.
- First, start with a variety of fabrics in different colors, including some that are clear, light, warm, cool, muted or dark so each can be tested against your hair and your skin.
- Choose a place with strong natural light and stand directly in front of your mirror to determine which colors you prefer.
- Stick with colors that make your eyes sparkle or seem to make your skin glow. Only wear colors that make you appear healthier, rather than tired or stressed.
Choosing the right colors for your skin tone involves a lot of trial and error and using the process of elimination. Pay close attention to which colors you’re wearing when you receive compliments. Most important, wear colors that make you feel confident and self-assured.
