3 Healthy Holiday Eating Strategies
The holiday season is one that is always filled with loads of tasty temptations, which is why it’s no surprise that the Christmas period is one of the main times of year when we put on weight. Seasonal party foods and decedent deserts are the downfall of many when it comes to food choices made over the holiday period, and although some of us don’t mind gaining a little extra weight in return for indulging in some treats, others may be watching their weight or don’t want to undo their hard work that they’ve put in over the year. We’ve put together some great tips
for healthy holiday eating that won’t make you feel left out.
Everything in Moderation
There is no reason whatsoever why you shouldn’t be able to indulge in a treat or two over the Christmas period, after all it’s what the holidays are for. However, if you’re still looking to be diet conscious over the season, it’s important that you know where to stop and when to say no. ‘Everything in moderation’ is an excellent term that should be taken seriously when it comes to the choices that you make over the holiday season. So, if you’d normally have two helpings of Christmas cake, limit yourself to one this year. This way, you won’t feel completely left out but you won’t overdo it either.
Start the Day Right
Just because it’s the holiday season doesn’t mean that you should eat unhealthily all of the time. If you have a Christmas party or meal coming up in an evening, it’s still vital that you start the day right and make sure that your body gets all of the nutrients and vitamins that it needs from food during the day. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and a healthy, nutritious breakfast should not be skipped, even if it’s Christmas. Eating a breakfast meal that is rich in fiber and protein will help to keep you fuller for longer and curb your cravings when you’re offered festive food.
Evaluate Your Options
If you’re at a party or gathering where there is a buffet spread, there will almost always be some options that are healthier than others. Even if you go for a meal where you are presented with a menu, many restaurants offer a ‘lighter’ menu that offers food which is less calorific than the other options. Weighing up and carefully evaluating your options before you make a choice will help you to make more informed decisions and be in control of your eating, whilst still being able to enjoy yourself. When it comes to drinking alcohol, again the choices that you make can have an impact. Certain alcohols are higher in calories than others, with spirits such as vodka being the best option for the health-conscious.
