How to Get a Job in Healthcare

Working in the healthcare profession is an extremely rewarding job, not just financially, but also from a job satisfaction point of view. There are many careers within the healthcare industry, each requiring a certain set of qualifications and experience. Nurse

You may consider becoming a nurse if you have an interest in medicine and enjoy the prospect of helping a variety of people in busy environments. Nurses can work in hospitals, health care centres, and in the community, visiting people in their homes. Becoming a nurse involves extensive study and you will need to successfully complete a relevant Bachelor’s Degree followed by an accredited registered nursing program. These studies will be combined with work experience. You will also need to pass various exams before obtaining a state license and securing a job as a registered nurse.

Occupational therapist

This healthcare profession involves helping people recover from accidents and assistance with re-learning certain motor-skills and everyday tasks. This could include helping patients learn hygiene skills, and how to dress themselves. An occupational therapist aims to assist with independence, and can also help with any emotional problems a patient may be experiencing after their accident. Pharmacist

A role which will be of particular interest to those wishing to work directly with medicine, a pharmacist is one of the higher earning occupations in healthcare besides doctor. In addition to organising and dispensing medicine, you may, on occasion, diagnose minor ailments for customers. To qualify as a pharmacist, you can either study specifically Pharmacology for four years to achieve a Bachelor’s Degree, or, study for eight years if your first degree is in a related subject. You will also need a lot of experience to qualify as a pharmacist.

Doctor

There is no easy route to becoming a qualified doctor, and you will need to be dedicated to the role to be successful.  Besides around 8 years of study you will also need to complete between 3 and 7 years as a resident in a hospital before qualifying as a licensed doctor. During your studies you can choose to specialise in a certain area of medicine. Although it takes several years to eventually become a doctor, this is a rewarding role suited to those with a dedicated work ethic and passion for medicine.

Respiratory therapist

Specialising in cardio-pulmonary care, a respiratory therapist is responsible for diagnosing and treating a variety of respiratory problems. You will need an accredited Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in the relevant area, and extensive experience to qualify as a respiratory therapist. Professional development is an essential part of the job and you will also need to renew your licensing status every few years.
